Augustine Uchenna Stephen, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, left the party on Friday, claiming that it “is not in order.”
Stephen said he reached the choice after extensive consultation in a resignation letter sent to the chairman of the state party and his ward chairman in Ubakala Ward B, Umuahia South LGA. However, he did not reveal the name of the next political party he planned to join.
The resignation comes shortly after Ifeanyi Uchendu, the immediate past deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, left the PDP and joined the APC in Ohafia’s Isiama Ward. While there, he also complimented the work of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, two APC federal lawmakers.
Augustine Stephen Uchenna’s resignation letter, which read
With effect from the date of this letter, I formally want to leave the Peoples Democratic Party. I had extensive conversations with friends and family before making this personal decision.
Stephen stated that he was pleased with the current Abia State administration’s success and that he did not want to be connected to a party that was struggling.
In response to Uchenna’s resignation, a few Umuahia South party members expressed surprise at his choice to leave the PDP.
The PDP chapter in Abia State, however, has insisted that the party is still functioning and whole.
The Party claimed that the departure of a few politicians from the party did not imply that the PDP had failed or died in a statement signed by Ugwumba Adiele, Special Assistant on Media to PDP Chairman of Abia State, Alwell Asiforo Okere.
In response to a group known as the Abia PDP Network calling for the resignation of State Party Chairman Alwell Asiforo Okere, Adiele called the outfit “Faceless” and stated that the PDP would continue to be the dominant opposition party in Abia.
Although he called the PDP State Secretariat’s sealing a political witch hunt, he insisted that it had no bearing on how the party was operated.
