AEDC’s Power Pact Boosts Abuja Grid In 2024

Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has taken a groundbreaking step towards enhancing its position in integrated power solutions by signing a tripartite agreement with Daystar Power Solutions Limited and The Wood Factory. The move underscores AEDC’s commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable electricity solutions to commercial and industrial customers in Nigeria.

In a statement released to Findwhosabi News, AEDC’s strategic collaboration marks the initiation of its first grid-connected and solar hybrid power solution for commercial and industrial clients within the country. This development follows the successful launch of the first interconnected mini-grid power solution for communities in Toto, Nasarawa State, in November 2023, in collaboration with strategic partners.

According to the statement, AEDC will provide Wood Factory, a prominent furniture manufacturer, with 18 hours of reliable electricity supply, while Daystar Power will contribute an additional 6 hours of solar-powered electricity. This interconnected power solution is expected to yield a remarkable 44% reduction in energy costs and an impressive 76% annual decrease in carbon emissions for Wood Factory.

Christopher Ezeafulukwe, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AEDC, expressed enthusiasm about the transformative opportunities the partnership brings, stating, “This project is a product of our consistent questioning of the status quo in the resilient push of our conviction and belief in using diversified energy sources to serve our customers better while closing the supply gap in our market.”

Ezeafulukwe highlighted that the focus of the current agreement is to serve industrial and commercial clients, aligning with AEDC’s objective of becoming a clear leader among power distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria.

The collaboration with Daystar Power adds to AEDC’s track record of forming strategic partnerships. The company has previously teamed up with the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), with funding support from the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), to explore distributed solar energy and grid power optimization.

Jasper Graf von Hardenberg, CEO of Daystar Power, emphasized the potential of working with DisCos to provide reliable and affordable power to Nigerian businesses. He expressed excitement about future hybrid solar projects for commercial and industrial customers in partnership with AEDC.

Mohamed Akar, Director and General Manager of The Wood Factory, welcomed the transition from self-generated supply to the integrated power solution provided by AEDC and Daystar. Akar stated, “We believe that the future of our business has become brighter with this new partnership with AEDC and Daystar.”

This tripartite agreement signifies AEDC’s readiness to explore complementary partnerships that add substantial value to the Nigerian electricity market, signaling a positive shift towards sustainable and efficient power solutions.
