“African Union Convenes Over Niger Coup”

The African Union (AU) has organized a meeting to discuss the Niger crisis, which was triggered by the coup on July 26 that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the AU’s Peace & Security Council announced the meeting, stating, “AU’s Peace & Security Council meets to receive an update on the evolution of the situation in Niger and the efforts to address it.”

The meeting is being held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Attendees include Moussa Faki Mahamat, the AU Commission chief, as well as representatives from Niger and the West African bloc ECOWAS.

Moussa Faki Mahamat has expressed deep concern about the reported poor conditions of President Bazoum’s detention, condemning the treatment by the coup leaders as “unacceptable.”
