Alec Baldwin Faces Manslaughter Charges

In a significant legal development, Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin, 65, is facing an indictment by a grand jury in New Mexico for involuntary manslaughter, related to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust.” Findwhosabi News has learned that prosecutors are seeking to hold Alec Baldwin accountable for the incident that occurred during the filming of a scene at a ranch near Santa Fe in October 2021.

Alec Baldwin, who held dual roles as the star and producer of “Rust,” was initially charged in January 2023, only to see the charges dropped three months later. The defense team raised concerns about the functionality of Baldwin’s Colt.45 at the time of the incident. Despite these initial setbacks, a recent turn of events has led to a grand jury indictment, marking a renewed legal battle for the actor.

During the tragic incident, the gun discharged while cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was preparing to film with Baldwin. Despite maintaining that he was informed the gun did not have live rounds and there should not have been live ammunition on set, Baldwin has consistently denied responsibility for Hutchins’ death. A forensic report commissioned by the prosecution, pointing to Baldwin pulling the trigger, played a pivotal role in reopening the criminal case.

If convicted of involuntary manslaughter in New Mexico, Alec Baldwin could potentially face up to 18 months in prison. In response to the developments, Baldwin’s attorneys, Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro, issued a statement on Friday, expressing their anticipation for the upcoming legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna Hutchins, pursued legal action following the tragedy and reached a settlement in October 2022. The settlement ensures financial support for the couple’s son, who was 9 years old at the time of his mother’s death, through insurance funds and a share of the film’s profits.

As the legal saga unfolds, “Rust” awaits distribution, having been completed despite the challenges posed by the tragic incident. Findwhosabi News will continue to provide updates on this high-profile case as it progresses through the legal system.
