Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross River State, has been named by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to lead its Edo State governorship primary election committee.
This came after numerous requests from different places for the dismissal of Hope Uzodinma, the chairperson of the electoral committee.
The committee was chaired by Hope Uzodinma, the governor of Imo and chairman of the panel. The committee produced three candidates, Dennis Idahosa, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Anamero Sunday Dekeri, and pronounced Dennis Idahosa the winner of the exercise. This created controversy.
In response to the dispute, the ruling party’s National Working Committee ruled that the first primary poll was inconclusive. On Tuesday night in Abuja, they called an emergency meeting, during which it was decided to hold a new primary on Thursday.
The chairman of the new committee that will oversee the election is none other than Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, according to a list made public on the eve of the fresh primary.
Prior to the announcement, there was indignation from a number of places calling for Uzodinma to be removed from his position as panel chairman.
The APC Constitution, the Electoral Act, and Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Lucky Imasuen, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and General Charles Airhiavbere, rtd., all signed the statement jointly on behalf of the candidates, stating that Uzodinma did not adhere to the minimal standards for compliance with the pertinent provisions of the laws and regulations guiding the election.
