Asake: “The Meaning Behind My Stage Name and Its Significance”

Ahmed Ololade, widely known as Asake, a popular singer, has shed light on the reason behind adopting his mother’s name as his stage name.

Asake explained that during his time in a cultural group, he was often referred to as “Omo Asake,” signifying “child of Asake” in Yoruba, because his mother’s name is Asake. Over time, the “Omo” prefix was dropped, and he was simply called “Asake.”

He said, “My stage name is actually my mother’s. While I was in the cultural group, people used to call me ‘omo Asake,’ which means child of Asake in Yoruba. And after a while, it just stuck. People stopped adding the ‘omo’ and left ‘Asake.’ I thought it was cool and decided to go by it.”

He found the name appealing and decided to adopt it as his stage name. Asake elaborated on this in an interview for Pause Magazine’s Autium 2023 edition.

He also expressed his commitment to singing in Yoruba, emphasizing the importance of his cultural identity. Asake stated, “It is very important to me, and I am not going to lose it. It is what has brought me this far, and I continue to keep it that way.”
