Atiku Abubakar Open to PDP-Labour Party Merger for 2027 Elections

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed openness to a potential merger between the PDP and the Labour Party ahead of the 2027 general elections. In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, the former Vice President revealed that a merger could be possible if it aligns with the strategic goals of the parties involved.

“The discussions of merging are in line with our goals to strengthen our democracy and ensure the nation’s best interest. Yes, a merger is very much possible if it serves our common goals,” Atiku stated, indicating a willingness to collaborate with Labour Party’s Peter Obi and other opposition leaders.

Atiku’s remarks follow recent meetings with Peter Obi and other key political figures, fueling speculation about a potential coalition to create a stronger opposition for the 2027 elections. He emphasized that these meetings are crucial for fostering political dialogue and are not merely election-focused but aimed at addressing the broader challenges facing Nigeria.

Dismissing the idea that his political engagement is purely for electioneering, Atiku highlighted his commitment to national well-being and democratic progress. His openness to a merger underscores a strategic move to consolidate opposition forces in a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
