Bankers and financial institutions across Nigeria have been instructed to adhere to the strike directive issued by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) regarding the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers. The directive, conveyed through a statement signed by Muhammed Ishivaku Sheikh, the general secretary of the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), emphasizes the need for the federal government to agree on a new national minimum wage and reverse the recent increase in electricity tariffs.
NUBIFIE has called for full compliance with the strike, which commenced on Monday, June 3, 2024. Despite the directive, many bank branches did not comply, with workers observed attending to customers at their duty posts. However, there were reports of NLC members disrupting operations at a branch of Polaris Bank in Lagos, preventing customers from accessing services in line with the declared strike action.
