Benue police catch fleeing thieves, kill two

Two of the armed robbers who stormed a police station and murdered officers in Otukpo, Benue State, on Friday have been apprehended and killed by police in Benue State.

The thieves stole an undetermined quantity of money from many banks, including First Bank, United Bank for Africa, Zenith Bank, Access, and Stanbic Bank, before they attacked the police station.

The spokesman for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, revealed in a statement on Saturday that security personnel had stopped the robbers at the Otukpo-Taraku route and had murdered two of them.
According to the statement, simultaneous armed robberies occurred at Access, First, Zenith, UBA, and Stanbic Bank Otukpo on October 20, 2023, at about 16:15 hours.

“The Otukpo Divisional Police Officer, CSP. John Adikwu, and other police teams in the area engaged them in a gunfight but were unable to stop their attack on the banks,” the statement continued.To help stabilize the area and stop the robbers from fleeing, more police teams and other security personnel were dispatched to Otukpo.

Two of the robbers who were stopped near the Otukpo-Taraku route engaged officers in a gunfight, which resulted in their deaths. Police are pursuing other gang members who abandoned their cars and fled into the nearby woodland.

Other people who were hurt in the bank have been sent to the hospital for treatment, according to the report. The investigation is still ongoing.
