In a recently unveiled memoir titled ‘Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser, Media and Publicity (2015 – 2023),’ former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has shed light on his decision not to remove the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, amidst speculations about his presidential ambition during the 2023 elections.

Buhari, as revealed in the memoir written by his former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, explained that he refrained from sacking Emefiele due to the lack of concrete evidence regarding his alleged presidential aspirations.
“When he (Emefiele) was linked with the campaign for the 2023 presidency, I did not ask him because he told nobody he was getting involved. Otherwise, I would have removed him and told the nation why,” Buhari stated in the memoir.
The former president emphasized the importance of having firm evidence before taking such actions, noting that it would be “unfair” and “an act of injustice” to remove someone based on hearsay. Buhari expressed his awareness of the potential long-term consequences of unjust actions, stressing the need for fairness in dealing with individuals who serve in leadership roles.
“I’m very conscious about the morale of people who serve with me. I also expect whoever succeeds me to be fair to me. I have family, friends, who will feel it. I’m very conscious of fairness,” Buhari added.
During the book unveiling ceremony, President Bola Tinubu commended Buhari for not interfering in his administration since leaving office in 2023. Tinubu recalled Buhari’s assurance that he would not intrude or interfere in the affairs of the succeeding administration.
Meanwhile, Godwin Emefiele, the former CBN governor, has recently expressed his contemplation of running for the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket. Emefiele mentioned seeking divine direction and acknowledged the financial implications, including drawing down on his “hard-earned savings” from 35 years of service.
This revelation came shortly after a group of farmers and business people obtained the N100m nomination and expression of interest forms on Emefiele’s behalf, urging him to vie for the presidency. The primary election is scheduled for the end of the month.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Emefiele’s potential entry into the presidential race adds an intriguing dimension to Nigeria’s political dynamics.
