“Cameroon Dam Alert: Evacuation Urged to Prevent Flood Deaths”

The release of a significant amount of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has led Nigerian states along the path of the River Benue to prepare for possible flood disasters. States at risk have urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate for their safety and to prevent loss of life and property.

Around 11 states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River, are anticipated to experience the negative effects of the dam’s release.

Cameroon informed the Nigerian government of its decision to open the Lagdo Dam’s floodgates due to heavy rainfall in the dam’s catchment area. To mitigate damage, the dam’s authorities plan to release water in small, controlled amounts.

Various states have initiated measures to address potential flooding. These include demolishing structures on waterways, designating schools as shelters for internally displaced persons, and urging residents to relocate to safer areas.

While the dam’s release is ongoing, Nigerian authorities and agencies are emphasizing the importance of preparedness, vigilance, and timely evacuation to minimize the impact of possible flooding.
