The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirmed on Wednesday that its website has been hacked, joining a rising trend of cyberattacks on public institutions in Nigeria. The agency assured the public it is working to restore the site and urged users to disregard any messages posted until full recovery.
At 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, the NBS website displayed a blank page with the message “Page Hacked.” This incident follows a series of breaches, including access to sensitive personal data earlier this year, and highlights Nigeria’s vulnerability to cyber threats.
Reports from Check Point Software Technologies ranked Nigeria 19th globally for cyber threats in July 2024, with government agencies facing an average of 1,791 cyberattacks weekly. The federal government has since issued over 30 advisories to counter these threats.
