Dad didn’t support my music, I sold recharge cards to buy studio time – Spyro

Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, shared his journey of pursuing a music career despite facing opposition from his father. In a recent episode of the “Tea With Tay” podcast, Spyro disclosed that his father, who is a pastor, initially thwarted his dream of becoming a fine artist and later opposed his decision to pursue music.

Despite his father’s disapproval, Spyro rebelled and embraced music as his calling. He highlighted the challenges he faced, including taking up menial jobs like selling recharge cards to support himself and afford studio time for recording.

Spyro reflected on his early interest in music, being part of the church choir and playing the drum set in primary school. Despite the conflict with his father, he believed that music was his calling from God. The singer’s determination and rebellion against parental opposition eventually led to his rise in the music industry.

Spyro gained prominence with the viral success of his song ‘Who Is Your Guy’ in 2023, and the remix featuring Tiwa Savage won the Best Collaboration of the Year at the 2023 Headies Awards. His story highlights the challenges faced by artists in pursuing their passions, especially when met with parental resistance.
