Bello Matawalle, the minister of state for defense, has reiterated that only the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces are permitted by law to utilize military camouflage while conducting joint operations.
Henshaw Ogubike, the Defense Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, stated in a statement that the Minister’s demand coincides with a period in which criminals have exploited military and paramilitary equipment to continue committing crimes in the nation.
He claimed that in order to maintain order in the system and prevent illicit activity, the government forbade other paramilitary agencies from using military camouflage.
“The current state of affairs does not justify the use of military camouflage by individuals who are not DHQ employees or authorized.” Matawalle
The Minister stated that other than the Armed Forces—the Army, Navy, and Air Force—the wearing of camouflage clothing by other security services is still prohibited.
He did, however, make an exception for the Nigerian Police Force, stating that they may only deploy it in conjunction with a military operation.
The Minister stated that the ban’s enforcement is essential given the security ramifications and the concerns expressed about proliferation and dishonesty in the nation.
The purpose of the measure is to monitor Nigeria’s crime rate. We can rapidly distinguish lawbreakers who want to trick us by identifying individuals who are permitted to wear the camouflage, he said.
