The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Nigeria, Benjamin Kalu, has stated that bills aimed at supporting women’s rights and inclusion, which failed to pass in the 9th National Assembly, will not be rejected again in the 10th National Assembly. Kalu expressed his commitment to championing the cause of women’s rights and empowerment and ensuring their representation in legislative processes.
During the 40th anniversary celebration of NEWS Engineering Limited and the launch of the NEWS 40/40 Leadership Development Fellowship, Kalu emphasized the importance of recognizing and appreciating the power of women. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including traditional rulers and government officials.
Kalu, who is also the Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, stressed the need for gender equality, equity, and inclusiveness in Nigerian society. He expressed confidence that legislative interventions aimed at achieving these goals would receive support at the highest levels of government, including the Presidency.
The event celebrated the achievements of Josephine Nwaeze, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of News Engineering, who successfully led the company following the loss of her husband during a plane crash in 2006.
The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, commended Nwaeze for her achievements and emphasized the significant role women can play in fast-tracking Nigeria’s economic development. He highlighted the impact of women in nation-building and encouraged giving women key positions in government.
The commitment of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and the celebration of women’s leadership achievements reflect ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in Nigeria, both in the legislative arena and the private sector. The 10th National Assembly’s potential support for women’s rights and inclusion is seen as an important step forward in this regard.
