On Wednesday, there was a small amount of drama in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court when the nominal complainant, Mr. James Bassey, sobbed as he begged for Pius Savoir, a dry cleaner who had been sentenced to one month in prison for stealing a pressing iron and N20,000, to be given a break.
Savior’s guilty plea and the presentation of the case’s facts were followed by the Chief Magistrate Patrick Adekomaiya’s sentencing.
The chief magistrate stated that because the defendant was a first-time offender, the court would be moderate in its punishment.
As a result, Adekomaiya convicted Savior and gave him a one-month sentence, with three weeks spent performing community service at the Morogbo Police Station and the remaining seven days in jail.
Bassey sobbed and begged for the condemned to be given a pardon just after the sentence was delivered.
“My Lord, this inmate looks after me constantly; I don’t have a wife or children.
“He used to help me with all of my household chores and give me massages, but his propensity for stealing is too great, so I reported him when he started stealing my money and pressing iron.
Nobody would help me if you put him in jail right away, and this might result in my demise, he warned’.
