Driver Surrenders After Fatal Gbagada Accident, Faces Manslaughter Charges

The driver of the Honda Saloon car involved in the tragic accident that resulted in the death of two Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers has surrendered to the police. The incident occurred while the sweepers were discharging their duties along Gbagada Expressway on Monday morning.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the driver turned himself in on Monday night. He disclosed that the driver would be charged to court on Tuesday for manslaughter.

Hundeyin clarified that the incident was deemed an accident and not a deliberate act of murder. The driver is expected to face legal consequences for his involvement in the fatal accident.

The initial reports suggested that the driver fled the scene after colliding with the LAWMA sweepers, allegedly attempting to escape from officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). However, the Ministry of Transportation has since denied the involvement of LASTMA officials in the accident.

In a statement released on Monday night, the Ministry of Transportation assured the public that the outcome of the police investigation would be made public. The statement emphasized that if anyone is found culpable, they will face the consequences of the law. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for thorough investigations to determine the cause of the tragic accident.
