Ebonyi Airport Faces Boycott Due to Defective Runway

Local airlines have reportedly boycotted the newly inaugurated Ebonyi airport due to a defective runway. The airport, launched in April 2023, faced challenges shortly after its inauguration when news circulated about runway defects, leading to airlines avoiding landing at the facility. The Federal Ministry of Aviation recommended the use of asphalt to overlay the runway for repairs.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has proposed an additional N13.7 billion for the repairs, raising the total cost of the project to about N49.6 billion. The decision to spend more funds on the airport has generated criticism, with stakeholders questioning the need for additional expenses and urging a thorough review of the project.

The controversy surrounding the airport highlights concerns about due diligence in project planning and execution, as well as the economic implications of infrastructure projects with construction defects. The state government’s commitment to correcting the defects and ensuring the airport’s functionality is juxtaposed with criticism about the initial choice of construction technology and the subsequent financial implications for the state.

The situation underscores the importance of careful project planning, rigorous oversight, and adherence to industry standards in infrastructure development to avoid wasteful expenditure and maximize the benefits of public investments.
