Political goons purportedly employed by a front-runner in the Edo State governorship primary for the All Progressives Congress, or APC, broke into the coalition center on Saturday and interfered with the proceedings.
According to reports, the numerous returning electoral officers had already announced the results of eight local governments before the gangs of hundreds of people stormed the Lushville Hotels and Suites in Gapiona, GRA, Benin City.
Even though there were heavily armed security personnel present, the thugs interfered with the coalition exercise. Along with attacking journalists, they also ejected party leaders from the State Working Committee and electoral officers from the location.
Following that, the coalition of the primary results was put on hold.
But Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, the chairman of the electoral committee, was in the Protea Hotel.
Prior to the disturbance caused by thugs, the outcomes for eight of the eighteen local government districts were declared. Out of the eight, Hon. Dennis Idahosa won two local government districts, and Senator Monday Okpebholo won six.
Live television coverage of the collation took place at the Lushville Hotel and Suite in GRA, Benin City. When news reporters were told to leave the event center, results from eight local government areas had already been released.
The criminals overpowered police officers stationed at the gate before descending upon the event.
Numerous journalists suffered physical harm and equipment damage, including an NTA cameraman and an FRCN reporter. The thugs continued their free-for-all even with Funsho Adeboye, the Commissioner of Police for Edo State, and party leaders present at the collation center.
