Edo Local Polls: Parties Vie for Chairmanship and Councillor Seats

Edo State is bracing itself for a significant democratic exercise as voters prepare to head to the polls for the local government elections on Saturday. In a bid to elect 18 council chairmen and 192 councillors, over 4,500 polling units across the state will be activated.

Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), Justice James Oyomire (retd), shared that meticulous arrangements have been concluded to ensure the smooth distribution of electoral materials to the designated polling units.

Of the 18 registered parties, 11 were invited by EDSIEC to partake in the election. However, only seven of these parties submitted the required forms within the stipulated time frame.

The participating parties include Accord Party, African Action Congress, Africa Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, and Peoples Democratic Party.

To bolster security measures throughout the election process, the commission engaged various security agencies in the state. Additionally, the commission actively engaged with the local communities and key stakeholders to facilitate a successful electoral exercise.

Justice Oyomire emphasized the commission’s preparedness, highlighting the training provided to election officers and personnel, as well as the logistical arrangements in place for the smooth deployment of election materials to polling units.

As Edo State gears up for this important electoral event, citizens are set to exercise their right to vote, shaping the composition of local governance in the region.
