Edo Specialist Hospital Launches Free Hepatitis B Screening and Vaccination Drive

In a commendable initiative, the Edo Specialist Hospital kicked off a four-day campaign on August 7, 2023, offering free hepatitis B screening and vaccinations to Edo State residents. This effort coincides with the 2023 World Hepatitis Week and is aimed at raising awareness about the potentially fatal liver disease.

Dr. Esene Samuel, heading the team, explained that the campaign aims to combat hepatitis B, a serious liver infection. Early detection, thorough screening, and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference in tackling this deadly infection.

The program comprises three stages. Individuals receive the first dose, followed by another after a month, and the final dose is taken six months later. Missing any dose necessitates restarting the process.

For those testing positive, follow-up tests assess the viral load and liver damage. Samuel underlined the importance of educating positive cases about lifestyle changes for improved health.

Despite the disease’s severity and the liver’s vital role, awareness about hepatitis B remains low. Samuel emphasized the need for increased awareness, screening, and vaccination efforts by hospitals, individuals, and governments.

The Edo Specialist Hospital’s commitment to addressing health challenges and enhancing society’s well-being showcases their dedication to public welfare. This initiative reflects their ongoing efforts to contribute positively to the community.
