Abuja, Nigeria – The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has expressed deep frustration over the pervasive corruption in Nigeria. Speaking on Tuesday while receiving the management team of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, led by its Chairman, Mohammed Shehu, Olukoyede remarked on the staggering amounts of money stolen, often visible in case files. He noted that such revelations make him question how the country continues to survive under the weight of corruption.
Olukoyede emphasized that public corruption is the primary driver of the country’s widespread graft. He cited instances where unspent budget allocations are illicitly transferred to private accounts in commercial banks just before the end of budget cycles. This, he said, reflects a troubling mindset among those in positions of trust. He underscored that removing public corruption would significantly improve Nigeria’s standing and performance on the global stage.
In his address, Olukoyede called for enhanced transparency and accountability across both public and private sectors to foster the nation’s development. While acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by corruption, he expressed confidence in the preventive measures being implemented under his leadership. These efforts, he assured, aim to stay ahead of corrupt practices and ensure that Nigerians experience effective and transparent governance.
