The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed deep grief over the tragic death of its officer, Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was killed while on official duty in Anambra State. In a statement released by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC condemned the misleading narratives circulating on social media, calling them callous and disrespectful to the memory of the late officer. Salisu was reportedly shot by a suspected fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, who resisted arrest and opened fire on EFCC officials.
According to the EFCC, Salisu and his team were conducting a documented operation at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Awka, targeting a group of suspected internet fraudsters. While 37 suspects were successfully apprehended, Ikechukwu refused to cooperate after spotting the officials on his CCTV system. Instead, he resorted to violence, killing Salisu and injuring another officer. Preliminary investigations confirmed Ikechukwu’s involvement in internet fraud and questionable online medical supply activities. The EFCC emphasized its commitment to ensuring that the suspect faces justice.
The EFCC warned against downplaying the growing threat posed by internet fraudsters, whom it accused of escalating their activities to include armed violence, kidnapping, and ritual killings. The agency reaffirmed its resolve to protect its operatives and combat corruption with full force, stressing that attacks on its personnel would not go unpunished. While mourning Salisu’s loss, the EFCC expressed gratitude for the support of sister agencies and concerned Nigerians during this challenging time.
