The whereabouts of supporters of the impeached Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, were initially unclear after their arrest on Monday during a protest at the Assembly complex. Obasa was impeached by 32 of 40 lawmakers and replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
About 15 supporters were rounded up by security operatives as they protested Obasa’s removal. Some were detained in a van at the Assembly gate, while others found loitering nearby were also apprehended. However, a local source later confirmed their release around 11 p.m. on Monday night.
As of Tuesday, armed security personnel and patrol vehicles were still stationed at the Assembly complex to maintain order. Efforts to reach the Lagos Police Command for further clarification on the arrests and release were unsuccessful.
