Ezekwesili Criticizes Government Over Food Stampede Responses

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has criticized the Federal Government for its handling of food stampedes caused by charitable outreaches across Nigeria. Speaking via X, Ezekwesili condemned public officials for failing to address the root causes of desperation among citizens while targeting philanthropists whose efforts, she argued, have sustained many struggling Nigerians.

Ezekwesili highlighted how leadership failures have exacerbated the crisis, turning peaceful food distribution events into dangerous stampedes. She accused government officials of being detached from the realities of widespread hunger and poverty, cocooned in luxury while neglecting the plight of the masses. She urged leaders to show humility and empathy instead of blaming those trying to fill gaps caused by government shortcomings.

The former minister also expressed hope that the courts would treat humanitarians involved in the incidents fairly, recognizing their intent to help in dire circumstances. She called for reflection on the systemic issues driving the desperation that has made simple acts of charity perilous.
