Celtic’s seasoned goalkeeper, Joe Hart, has declared his intention to retire from professional football at the conclusion of the ongoing season.
Despite feeling “physically great,” the 36-year-old stalwart aims to conclude his career on a high note, expressing a desire to “smash through the finish line.” Having represented England and Manchester City extensively, Hart conveyed his decision to Celtic, where he is currently in his third season.

Manager Brendan Rodgers expressed heartfelt sentiments, acknowledging Hart’s invaluable contributions to the game. His career boasts an illustrious trajectory, marked by six cup medals with Manchester City and Celtic, along with double title successes both north and south of the border. His impact on the pitch has been profound, earning him admiration and respect from fans and peers alike.
In a candid interview with Celtic TV, Hart articulated the rationale behind his decision, emphasizing the need to prioritize his physical well-being and mental clarity. Despite feeling in peak condition, he recognizes the inevitability of time’s passage and seeks to retire on his terms, ensuring that his body does not dictate the end of his illustrious career.
“Physically I feel great, I feel as good as I possibly can do. For my age and what I have done to my body, I have been on the bench since I was 15, have been involved in professional football every day since I was 16,” he told Celtic TV. “I have gone down every avenue to keep myself in the best possible shape to give my all on game day and I do really think I am at that peak, but I am aware time waits for no man and I don’t want my body to be retiring me. That was one of the key factors, thinking I can smash through the finish line.”
“Mentally I am in the one place I like to be, I am in a place of clarity. Obviously I have thought about this a lot. There’s loads of key factors that have come into it but I think the right time is now.”
With an impressive tally of 690 club appearances across various teams including Shrewsbury, Burnley, and Tottenham, Hart’s journey reflects a profound dedication to the sport. His presence in the England squad during four consecutive major tournaments underscores his prowess and significance on the international stage.
During his tenure at Celtic, Hart played an instrumental role in the club’s triumphs, contributing to five of six domestic trophies under Ange Postecoglou’s management. Rodgers lauded Joe’s professionalism, describing him as a remarkable asset both on and off the pitch. As Hart embarks on the final stretch of his career, his unwavering commitment and exemplary work ethic serve as a testament to his enduring legacy in football.
