FG Declares May 1st Public Holiday for Workers’ Day Celebration

In a gesture of appreciation and recognition for the invaluable contributions of workers across Nigeria, the Federal Government has officially declared Wednesday, May 1, 2024, as a public holiday in honor of Workers’ Day.

This significant announcement came via a press statement released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday. The declaration, conveyed on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to upholding excellence, efficiency, and fairness within the workforce.

In his address, Minister Tunji-Ojo reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s steadfast dedication to fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity within workplaces across the nation.

He emphasized, “In alignment with this year’s theme, which focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, I wish to state that the Federal Government remains steadfast in its resolve to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens.”

Furthermore, he reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of workers in nation-building, Minister Tunji-Ojo called for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. He stressed the importance of synergy in implementing sustainable practices and policies that promote well-being in the workplace, guided by the principles of integrity, diligence, and compassion.

As anticipation mounts for the 2024 Workers’ Day celebration, all eyes are on President Bola Tinubu, with expectations high for the unveiling of the newly proposed minimum wage for workers in the country.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has outlined seven key demands from the Federal Government ahead of the Workers’ Day celebration. These demands include the call for a new minimum wage, the creation of state and local government police to tackle insecurity, and the insistence that states, local governments, and the organized private sector adhere to the new minimum wage once approved.

As Nigeria gears up to celebrate its diligent workforce, the Federal Government reiterates its commitment to advancing the welfare and rights of workers across the nation.
