Following a gay party at a hotel in Calabar, the assembly speaker is upset.

Following a recent incident of an alleged gay party held on June 30, 2023, at a hotel in Ekorinim, Calabar Municipality, concerns have been raised regarding the presence of underage attendees.

The Speaker of the House has addressed these concerns through a press release, as conveyed by his Press Secretary, Mr. Matthew Okache. The statement emphasizes the Speaker’s intention to collaborate with security agencies and relevant government departments to ensure the organizers of this event and their accomplices face appropriate legal consequences, serving as a deterrent to others.

Furthermore, Speaker Ayambem takes this opportunity to issue a stern warning to individuals and organizations involved in unlawful activities of this nature, highlighting the risk of prosecution by the authorities.

It is worth noting that the “Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill,” signed into law by former President Goodluck Jonathan on January 7, 2014, imposes severe penalties. Those who enter into same-sex marriages or civil unions may face a 14-year prison sentence, while individuals or groups involved in facilitating such unions may be subject to a 10-year sentence. The law also criminalizes the public display of same-sex relationships and the operation of gay clubs, societies, or organizations, imposing a 10-year imprisonment term on offenders.

Additionally, Speaker Ayambem reminds hospitality operators in the State that no hotel or club should admit individuals under the age of 18 unless they are accompanied by their parents or guardians. This measure ensures compliance with legal regulations and safeguards the well-being of minors.

By addressing these concerns and reinforcing legal boundaries, Speaker Ayambem aims to maintain order and protect the integrity of the community.
