Kenneth Okonkwo, a former Labour Party chieftain, has urged the Nigerian government to reduce petrol prices, emphasizing the need for affordability to ease the struggles of citizens. Speaking on his X account, the lawyer and actor stated that celebrating the resumption of the nation’s refineries is meaningless if Nigerians cannot afford fuel.
Okonkwo explained that lower fuel costs would reduce transportation expenses, decrease production costs, and ultimately bring down the prices of food and goods. This, he argued, would help combat inflation and reduce the overall cost of living, providing much-needed relief to citizens facing economic hardship.
The advocate also proposed the privatization of government-owned refineries, asserting that it would eliminate corruption, ensure efficiency, and encourage competition in the oil industry. According to him, such measures could help Nigerians refine their way out of poverty and end monopolistic practices that hinder economic growth.
