“Gabon Opposition Urges Pressure on Junta for Civilian Power Transition”

In a dramatic turn of events, Gabon’s main opposition group, Alternance 2023, has called upon the international community to intervene and encourage the military junta that recently seized power to relinquish control and reinstate civilian governance.

The coup, which unfolded shortly after President Ali Bongo was declared the winner of a controversial third term election, marked the eighth military takeover in West and Central Africa over the past three years. The coup was met with jubilant crowds in the capital, Libreville, signaling mixed sentiments within the nation.

While the coup leaders placed Bongo under house arrest and appointed General Brice Nguema as the transitional leader, the opposition group, Alternance 2023, has vehemently objected to these developments. They assert that they are the legitimate victors of the election held on the previous Saturday, challenging the outcome and raising concerns about the democratic process.

Alexandra Pangha, the spokesperson for Alternance 2023’s leader, conveyed their stance to the BBC, stating, “We were happy that Ali Bongo was overthrown but … we hope that the international community will stand up in favor of the Republic and the democratic order in Gabon by asking the military to give back the power to the civilians.” This appeal underscores their commitment to the principles of democracy and civilian rule.

Pangha also criticized the junta’s plan to inaugurate General Nguema as the head of state on Monday, deeming it “absurd.” This rapid transition of power has raised questions about the legitimacy and stability of the new leadership.

Gabon’s political landscape has been dominated by the Bongo family for nearly six decades, starting with Ali Bongo’s father, who assumed power in 1967. Critics argue that the family has not done enough to distribute the country’s wealth derived from oil and mining resources, leading to widespread disparities and grievances among the population.

As Gabon stands at this critical crossroads, the international community’s response and diplomatic efforts will play a pivotal role in determining the future of this Central African nation and whether it can transition toward a more democratic and inclusive governance model.
