Gabon PM: ‘Two-Year Transition to Elections Is Reasonable

Gabon’s newly appointed prime minister, Raymond Ndong Sima, has stated that a two-year transition period leading to free elections is a “reasonable objective.” In an interview with AFP, Ndong Sima expressed the desire to complete the transition within 24 months, with the understanding that the timeline could be adjusted slightly.

General Brice Oligui Nguema led a coup d’etat in Gabon in August, overthrowing President Ali Bongo Ondimba shortly after he was declared the winner of a presidential election that was contested by both the military and the opposition. Nguema, now serving as the president for the transitional period, has committed to returning the country to civilian rule through elections after the transitional phase, without specifying its exact duration.
