Government Halts Akure Monarch’s Market Closure

The Ondo State Government has overturned the Deji of Akure’s order to close the market for traditional festival celebrations. The monarch had directed the closure of markets to observe the Aheregbe Festival, but the government criticized the decision, stating that it violated the residents’ fundamental human rights.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, issued a statement after the state Executive Council meeting, explaining that no markets could be closed without the acting governor’s approval. She emphasized that even if approval was sought, any closure would have been limited to Oja-Oba (Oba’s Market) in Akure.

The government called on the Deji of Akure to respect their decision and avoid actions that could inconvenience or harm the livelihoods of Akure inhabitants. They stressed that the cordial relationship between the Deji and the government should not turn into open confrontation.

The statement assured Akure residents that they should carry on with their daily activities, as no market or shop should be closed by force. The government warned against violating their directive and encouraged everyone to abide by the law and pursue their happiness freely.
