Government Weighs Economic Stability for New Minimum Wage

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, announced that the federal government is focusing on economic productivity and stability in determining a new national minimum wage. Amid ongoing negotiations with organized labour and the private sector, Akume emphasized the importance of ensuring workers are productively engaged and controlling inflation to maintain a balanced economy.

Speaking to the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja, Akume highlighted the government’s commitment to not just increasing the minimum wage but also ensuring economic stability. He criticized the recent nationwide strike, during which the organized labour shut down the national grid, labeling it a treasonable offence and economic sabotage.

Akume reassured that the Bola Tinubu administration is committed to establishing an acceptable minimum wage and has implemented measures such as a 35,000-naira wage, surpassing the current minimum wage of 30,000 naira. He called for the church’s collaboration with the government in providing essential services in education, health, and agriculture to support the nation’s economic recovery and stability.
