Gunmen kill one, rape 3 Delta poly students

Following a gunman’s attack on the student residences at Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, which reportedly left one person dead and several injured, tension has descended on the campus.

Reporters learned that the school administration then declared a one-week academic closure in order to implement security protocols to prevent a repeat of the incident.
Speaking to reporters on the condition of anonymity on Monday, a female Higher National Diploma student reported that all of the pupils had left the school out of fear of being attacked by gunmen.

“Students are being shot at and raped by armed men who keep breaking into our hostels.” They raped two female students and shot one male student in the leg when they first arrived on Thursday.

She explained, “For the past two weeks, most of us have been traveling from our various homes to attend classes since students have left their hostels.”

A different student, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that one of the victims of the Friday shootings was a student.
“While others were slashed with cutlasses, one student was shot and died. The assailants shot a male student in addition to raping the female ones. The male student is bleeding from his anus, where he is undergoing treatment at the hospital, as I speak to you.

He clarified, “The school administration has closed the building and invited everyone to return home for a one-week holiday.
Reporters discovered that other victims of the serial attacks had their laptops and phones taken by the gunmen, who reportedly raped some female students and shot anyone who protested. The gunmen also demanded that the victims transfer money from their personal accounts to them.

According to reports, the school’s rector, professor Emmanuel Achuenu, made the announcement on Friday that classes would not be meeting due to safety concerns. Instead, classes were supposed to resume on Monday, February 26.

The students were given the assurance in a signed statement by SUG President Comrade Victor Anthony, Secretary General Onugege Graham, and Public Relations Officer Blessings Utomi that the school administration, SUG, the community, and security agencies would keep an eye on the situation and take the necessary action to reduce the high level of insecurity in the hostels within the allotted time.

The delta state Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer in Ogwashi-Uku, however, were reportedly called by the state Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, on Sunday over the issue, stating that the school had been closed due to a potential student protest.
