House Approves State of Emergency in Rivers

The House of Representatives has approved the State of Emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State. In a unanimous voice vote on Thursday, 243 lawmakers supported the decision after extensive debate and key amendments. The approval aligns with Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, allowing emergency measures to address security concerns in the state.

During the session, House Majority Leader Julius Ihonvbere explained the reasons behind the declaration, urging lawmakers to support efforts to restore stability. While many backed the move, some raised concerns about potential abuse of power and human rights violations, calling for strict oversight. To address these concerns, the House introduced key amendments, including forming a National Mediation Committee to facilitate dialogue and periodic reviews to ensure the emergency rule is not prolonged unnecessarily.

With no opposition recorded, the House ratified the emergency rule, emphasizing the need for swift action to restore peace. Lawmakers also adopted provisions allowing the National Assembly to take over Rivers State’s legislative duties if needed. The House adjourned until March 24, 2025, as the situation continues to unfold.
