The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has expressed concern over what it sees as low revenue from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). The Office of the Accountant General for the Federation reported that the NRC remitted only N345 million in revenue for 2023, covering January to September. During an interactive session with the Managing Director of the NRC, Fidet Okhiria, the committee raised questions about ticket racketeering by NRC staff, which Okhiria acknowledged. He mentioned that e-ticketing was the solution, and the government had approved it. The committee expressed worry about the revenue generated by the NRC and suggested that the railway should self-fund and remit any surplus to the government.
In another development, Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration is committed to the welfare of the Nigerian Armed Forces, including families of fallen heroes. Speaking after being decorated with the emblem of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Shettima emphasized the administration’s commitment to supporting the families of fallen heroes who made sacrifices for the unity of Nigeria and global peace. The National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Maj. Gen. Abdulmalik Jibrin, also urged Nigerians to contribute resources through the Nigerian Legion for the welfare of the families of fallen heroes.
