How to Know If Eggs Are Bad Without Breaking Them

  • Expiration Date (or Best-By Date): This is the date by which the eggs are best to eat. Eggs may still be fine after this date, but the quality might not be as good.

3. Shake the Egg

If you gently shake an egg and hear a sloshing sound inside, it may be a sign that the egg is old. Fresh eggs won’t make much noise because the yolk and white are still firm.

4. Smell Test

Though you don’t have to break the egg for this, you can sometimes smell a bad egg through the shell. If there’s a foul or sulfur-like odor, it’s likely gone bad. Fresh eggs won’t have much of a smell.
