Immediate Action to Address Devastating Gully Erosion Sites in Imo State”

The Senate has called upon the Ecological Fund Office (EFO) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to undertake necessary remedial measures to address the gully erosion sites in Ideato North and South Local Governments of Imo State. The resolution emphasizes the importance of engaging geologists, hydrologists, and environmental engineers to assess the situation and implement appropriate measures, such as stabilization, gabion installations, and terracing, to prevent further damage and minimize risks to nearby communities.

The motion, titled “Urgent Need for Remedial Work on Gully Erosion Sites in Ideato North and South LGAs, Imo State,” was sponsored by Izunaso Osita. In his argument, Osita highlighted the significant consequences of the total collapse of these gully erosion sites, including loss of human lives, destruction of properties estimated at over N4 billion, and severe injuries. He expressed deep concern over the continuous losses suffered by individuals, non-governmental organizations, and the government due to the erosion menace.

The motion further highlighted that a total of 12 communities have been affected, with the two local governments sharing borders with Anambra, Enugu, and Abia states. It stressed that the gullies and floodwaters have surpassed the capacity of the Imo State government, necessitating urgent intervention from the Federal Government to undertake immediate remedial work. The aim is to mitigate risks, prevent further loss of lives and properties, and address environmental degradation in the affected areas.

During the discussion on the motion, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, drew attention to the devastating impact of floods on numerous communities in Anambra State. He specifically mentioned a federal road on the verge of being severed by the destructive floods. Umeh urged relevant government agencies to intervene and support the South East region in combating the menace of flooding. He emphasized the urgency of the situation and called on all senators to support the motion.

Additionally, the Senate resolved that NEMA should promptly execute a community resettlement plan, as necessary, to relocate residents from high-risk areas, providing them with adequate housing, livelihood support, and essential amenities. It also urged NEMA and EFO to establish community-based initiatives, including emergency response teams, evacuation plans, and local task forces focused on disaster management, to enhance resilience in the affected regions.

The Senate commended the Imo State government for its swift response and intervention, which saved lives and reclaimed properties.
