Indigenous Religion Practitioners Denounce Legal Counsel for Traditionalist

Kwara State, Nigeria – The Isese Welfare Association, a group representing indigenous religion practitioners, has publicly denounced Barrister Muftau Olobi, one of the legal counsels representing Adegbola Abdulazeez, also known as Tani Olohun, an embattled traditionalist in court. This denouncement follows Adegbola’s arrest on August 16 and subsequent detention at a correctional facility in Ilorin, Kwara State, on charges including insulting the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

The Isese Welfare Association released a statement on October 11, 2023, disassociating themselves from Olobi, alleging that he is a practicing Muslim who frequently travels between Lagos and Kwara states.

Recently, Olobi issued a public apology on behalf of Adegbola, addressing it to the ‘Association of Proud Sons and Daughters of Ilorin Emirate’ and the ‘entire Muslim clerics and Muslim adherents worldwide.’ The apology claimed that Adegbola had repented and was “purged of his exuberances.”

In response to Olobi’s plea, the Isese Welfare Association publicly denounced Olobi and made clear that he was not their chosen legal representative. They asserted that Olobi’s apology letter was not sent with their consent.

Aderemi Ifaoleepin Aderemi, the coordinator of the association, explained that Olobi’s faith and alleged associations with the petitioners were the primary reasons for his denouncement. Aderemi also mentioned that Olobi was introduced to the association by a mutual friend who is an initiate.

In response to the denouncement, Olobi acknowledged that the association had asked him to stop representing Adegbola in court, citing his faith as the issue. He clarified that the apology letter was written at Adegbola’s request and that he eventually stepped aside as legal counsel for personal reasons.

The situation underscores the complexities and challenges faced by individuals and legal representatives involved in legal cases with religious or cultural dimensions. The dispute over representation and the apology letter reflects the nuances of handling legal matters with cultural and religious sensitivities.
