Inspector detained as son fatally stabs neighbor

The Officers’ Barracks of the Warri Area Command of the Nigerian Police in Delta State is tense because one of the residents, who happened to be the son of a serving Inspector, is said to have fatally stabbed another inmate after an argument.
We learned that the policeman, Destiny Ogbantu, a Madonna University student, lost his cool during the altercations and fatally killed their neighbor, Onyebuchi Emeka, close to their Block D, Warri Barracks apartments.
According to reports, the horrific tragedy took place on Friday, September 22, 2023, in the evening.

Witnesses claimed that after the two got into a fight, Destiny allegedly dashed upstairs to his father’s apartment to retrieve a knife and a dagger. He then came down and briefly pursued Onyebuchi across other blocks to the east end of the barracks before the latter fell into a gutter, according to the witnesses.
The inspector’s son, according to the eyewitnesses, repeatedly stabbed Onyebuchi in the back and deep inside his chest.

Residents of the barracks, including the mother of the suspected suspect and his siblings, saw everything, according to one of the witnesses who wished to remain anonymous.

According to reports, the person was subsequently transported to a neighboring private hospital by family members, but was declared dead soon after entry due to excessive blood loss brought on by the severity of the deep cuts.
The mother of the accused murderer allegedly “instantly rushed back to their apartment inside the barracks, packed all her children, including the suspect, and absconded from the barracks until this moment” after realizing the seriousness of her son’s action, according to sources. As of the time this report was filed, their whereabouts were still unknown.

However, Inspector Ogbantu, the suspect’s father, is reportedly in police prison and claims that he was “arrested as proxy for his son’s action and is in police custody currently.

The Nigerian Civil Rights Council’s Delta State chapter has intervened in the situation, pleading with the Nigeria Police Force to not ignore it.

Comrade Ojumude Bishop, a unit coordinator for the group, led a demonstration on Monday with several other members, including Comrade James Udume, the unit secretary, to the area commander of the Warri Area Police Command, demanding that justice be served for the murdered youth.
They also urged that Inspector Ogbantu, the suspect’s father, be forced to allow his son to stand trial without attempting to manipulate the evidence.
