The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) in the South East has been criticized by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for its inadequate electricity supply.
In addition, the pro-Biafea group denounced the absurd bills that local customers were forced to pay and issued a warning that the EEDC could face expulsion from the South East.
IPOB accused EEDC of escalating electricity bills on a daily basis without supplying electricity to the public.
“EEDC should be kicked out of the South East Region permanently and replaced if it can’t provide light or stop extortion in their billing system,” stated IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful in a statement released on Monday.
“We fail to see how an electricity distribution firm could refuse to supply light while continuing to raise monthly electricity costs. In contrast to EEDC, several electrical distribution firms in other parts of Nigeria offer more dependable electricity.
“The company is determined to deprive the South Eastern region of electricity while simultaneously forcing Ndigbo to pay exorbitant electricity bills.” Even though EEDC is not keeping the lights on, they are still raising the monthly bills for their customers. Ndigbo are making payments for the light that they do not use.
“It should no longer be acceptable for the South East to engage in deceptive electricity billing, extortion, or non-supply of electricity.”
“South East Governors ought to take seriously their responsibility to offer our people high-quality services and a favorable investment climate so they may keep making investments and expanding their companies. Governors ought to seize the opportunity presented by the Federal Government of Nigeria’s recent electrical reform and force EEDC out of every state.
Every state now has the authority to produce and distribute electricity, thanks to the electrical reform. By law, governors in the South East are free to invite additional reputable energy providers to invest and offer Ndigbo high-quality, dependable, and reasonably priced power.
One would have thought that the South East Governors would have called EEDC by now due to the appalling quality of light and the exorbitant invoicing.
“Governors should ensure that they reduce the suffering of Ndigbo, including providing affordable and reliable electricity, especially now that the economic situation in Nigeria is biting so hard on everyone.”
