Former President Goodluck Jonathan has shed light on why his administration could not implement the 2014 National Conference recommendations, blaming the unstable political climate of the time. Speaking during a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Jonathan explained that political resistance, even from within his party, made it impossible to push the reforms forward.
According to Jonathan, a key lawmaker in his party defected and mobilized opposition against him, making it difficult to act on the report. However, he remains hopeful that a future government will revisit the document, as its recommendations were crafted by credible Nigerians and remain crucial for national progress.
The visit also saw former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other political leaders paying tribute to Adebanjo’s legacy. Later, Jonathan, Atiku, and several PDP stakeholders attended a dinner hosted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Lagos, where discussions on Nigeria’s political future continued.
