Kano, Others Await S’Court Election Verdicts

There is a prevailing sense of anxiety among political stakeholders and supporters as they await the Supreme Court’s judgment, expected to be delivered in January. The judgment will address various petitions challenging the rulings of the Court of Appeal on governorship elections held after the March 18, 2023, polls in various states.

Several candidates and political parties, dissatisfied with the outcomes declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), took their cases to court. The disputes have escalated to the Supreme Court in states like Kano, Lagos, Ogun, Nasarawa, Benue, and Bauchi.

Kano State: In Kano, tension is high as residents await the apex court’s judgment on the governorship election dispute between the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Appeal Court affirmed the tribunal’s decision that removed Governor Abba Yusuf and declared the APC candidate, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, as the authentic winner. Supporters of both parties have staged protests, with the NNPP disputing the ruling, alleging conflicting judgments.

Benue State: Residents in Benue await the Supreme Court’s verdict on the appeal by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Titus Uba, challenging the judgments of the tribunal and the Appeal Court, which upheld the election of Hyacinth Alia of the APC.

Election

Ogun State: In Ogun, the PDP expresses optimism about overturning Governor Dapo Abiodun’s victory at the apex court. The party claims that the mandate given to its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, was stolen by the APC. The APC dismisses these claims and advises Adebutu to focus on allegations of vote-buying and money laundering against him.

Lagos State: The Lagos State chapter of the PDP and its governorship candidate, Dr Olajide Adediran, anticipate victory at the Supreme Court. They challenge the qualification of the declared winner, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC, focusing on electoral law. The APC remains confident and refrains from commenting, awaiting the court’s judgment.

Nasarawa State: In Nasarawa, the Supreme Court will decide the fate of Governor Abdullahi Sule. The Appeal Court reversed the tribunal’s nullification of Sule’s election, declaring him the winner. The state APC expresses confidence in their victory at the apex court, urging PDP members to avoid inflammatory remarks.

Bauchi State: The APC in Bauchi State is hopeful of victory at the Supreme Court, challenging the judgments of the tribunal and the Appeal Court that upheld Governor Bala Mohammed of the PDP. The party calls on supporters to remain optimistic and prayerful.

The impending Supreme Court judgments will determine the final outcomes of these closely contested governorship elections, impacting the political landscape in these states.
