In recent developments, Kano State’s Hisbah, the security unit, has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding TikTok skit creators, emphasizing their aim to modify behavior rather than violate human rights. Notable figures like Murja Kunya and others have faced criticism for offensive content, prompting complaints from Islamic clergy.
According to Hisbah’s spokesperson, Idris Gama, the commission’s objective is behavior modification, focusing on correcting inappropriate aspects of youth behavior. Gama stressed that there is no compulsion, and individuals who acknowledge modifying their behavior are encouraged.
Recent engagements between the Hisbah Commission and TikTok creators, as well as Kannywood actors, revealed that some skit makers admitted their actions did not align with the law and pledged to conduct themselves differently. Gama highlighted a positive mutual understanding between the commission and content creators, noting indications of remorse and a willingness to change their social media approach.
The controversy has revolved around skit creators like Ado Gwanja, Ummi Shakira, Samha Inuwa, Murja, Mr. 442, Safara’u, Dan Maraya, Amude Booth, Kawu Dan Sarki, and Babiana. The state’s security team had previously called for the reprimand of Murja and others, emphasizing Kano’s adherence to Islamic customs.
Notably, Murja Kunya, a 24-year-old TikTok content creator from Kano State, gained fame for her controversial and outspoken Hausa-language videos. She recently faced charges, including acting indecently, using foul language, and committing acts against Islamic law, leading to her arrest by the Kano police. The Hisbah Commission continues to engage with content creators to address concerns and promote responsible social media behavior.
