Yunusa Tanko, the campaign spokesman for Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, faces allegations of conspiring with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to hijack the party, as claimed by LP leadership. The National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, released a statement in Abuja on Friday, accusing Tanko of making unauthorized remarks about the party and collaborating with NLC.
Tensions escalated when Obi’s campaign team clarified that his recent visit to the LP secretariat was for reconciliation, not endorsement, fueling disputes with LP’s leadership. Tanko emphasized Obi’s meeting with NLC’s Political Commission, further complicating matters.
LP disavowed Tanko’s actions, denouncing his alleged ambition to seize control of the party. They warned against his use of Obi’s name without permission and criticized NLC’s actions. Tanko, in response, deferred addressing the accusations immediately but hinted at future rebuttals.
Despite LP’s stance, Tanko’s political ally defended him, asserting his activist integrity and suggesting LP’s internal conflicts may be misinterpreted.
