Labour Party Urges Tinubu to Make Public Offices Unattractive

The Labour Party (LP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to make public offices less attractive to discourage violence and corruption in politics. Ayo Olorunfemi, LP’s National Deputy Chairman, made this appeal on Wednesday in response to the President’s broadcast marking the 25th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.

Olorunfemi criticized the current political climate, highlighting that lucrative public offices drive unhealthy competition, violence, and killings during elections. He argued that the high cost of running the government prevents ordinary Nigerians from reaping the benefits of democracy.

“The kind of huge resources we use to run our democracy cannot allow ordinary Nigerians to benefit from the system, hence the reason our economy is always under pressure,” Olorunfemi stated. He emphasized that true democracy should benefit the majority, not just a select few, and urged for reforms to ensure political offices attract only serious-minded individuals committed to public service.
