Lagos, July 17, 2023 – The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) successfully rescued seven children from a fire incident at an orphanage/motherless babies home in Lagos on Sunday. According to a statement from LASEMA’s Head of Public Affairs Unit, Mr Nosa Okunbor, the fire originated from an air conditioning unit in the house due to a power surge.
LASEMA swiftly responded to the incident and safely evacuated the seven male children from the one-storey building, located at No. 7 Wole Madariola St., off Enitan Kusimo Street, Aguda, Lagos. The children, aged between one and seven years old, were relocated to a nearby compound for their welfare.
The agency reported that the fire spread to the storage room but was successfully extinguished, with minimal damage to the first floor of the building. Post-disaster assessment indicated that the rest of the ground floor was salvaged. There were no injuries or casualties reported during the incident.
Officials from the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development received the children from LASEMA and handed them over to the Red Cross for further care. LASEMA concluded the operation swiftly and effectively.
