Letting Go for a Fulfilling New Year Journey – Part 1

We love the New Year. The prospect of new beginnings and opportunities for improvement instills a sense of hope and excitement.

The inherent drive to enhance ourselves, reach new heights, and push our boundaries finds its roots in God. Continually revealing fresh truths, beckoning us toward novel and at times challenging new adventures, God guides us on a path leading to the ultimate goal of embodying the qualities of Jesus.

Reflecting on instances where Jesus called individuals to higher purposes and uncomfortable transformations, such as the encounter with the rich young ruler or when he urged people to stand up, be healed, cease from sin, or maintain faith amid daunting circumstances, it becomes evident that stagnancy and comfortable familiarity are contrary to his teachings.

Yet, acknowledging the discomfort, there are times when we must relinquish habits, dependencies, and familiar thought patterns to evolve and position ourselves for more promising new years ahead. When contemplating the habits, behaviors, and even relationships to release in 2024, it’s crucial to recognize that God desires only the best for us. Any sacrifice directed by God is intended to bring about greater joy, peace, and freedom. With these principles in mind, I present six things to release to ensure that 2024 becomes our most fulfilling year yet.

  1. Overcoming Negative Thought Patterns

Negativity often results from thought patterns that stray from God’s principles. According to 2 Corinthians 10:5, we are encouraged to bring every thought captive to Christ. This involves consciously redirecting thoughts that convey messages like “You can’t do that” or “I wish I were her” to the Lord. While challenging, especially when negativity aligns with worldly standards, cultivating positivity is a mental exercise that aligns our perspective with God’s. Taking negative thoughts captive is just the beginning; replacing them with truths that oppose them is crucial.

Shifting our focus to God’s goodness, love, and faithfulness helps us overcome negative thoughts. If, for instance, weight loss feels impossible, redirect your thoughts to gratitude for health and the ability to exercise. When dealing with difficult co-workers, praying for them, seeking grace, and acknowledging our own strengths can shift our mindset. Although it requires practice, considering how Jesus would think and act in a situation, even when negativity seems justified, reminds us that God’s ways surpass human understanding. With a willing spirit, nothing is insurmountable with Him.

  1. Breaking Free from Guilt-Based Regret

Guilt-based regret is a burden that hinders growth. While no one enjoys failure, clinging to regrets and wishing for different outcomes can be paralyzing. Despite valid regrets, God calls us to repent, learn from our mistakes, and move forward without the weight of guilt. Romans 8:28 reassures us that God works all things together for our good, emphasizing the importance of trusting His ongoing plan.

Dwelling on past failures induces feelings of defeat and hopelessness, preventing us from embracing God’s unfolding plan. As we enter the New Year, consider adopting Romans 8:28 as a guiding scripture. Reflect on self-forgiveness as a resolution, asking God to release any lingering guilt or shame from past mistakes. Holding onto guilt and regret negatively impacts our well-being and even those around us. Surrendering these burdens to 2023 allows us to experience the freedom of refusing to dwell on the past.
