Adedayo Olawole, 29, has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Ado Ekiti Division of the Ekiti State High Court for the murder of Chukwudi Joseph.
In addition, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison for plotting the deceased person’s murder.
On March 29, 2023, he was charged with two offenses that involved murder and conspiracy.
That Adedayo Olawole and others who are now at large at Eporo in Emure, Ekiti, did conspire to murder one Chukwudi Joseph is the charge. Sections 244 and 243 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, Nigeria, 2021, are violated by the offenses.
In his evidence before the court, one of the eyewitnesses, the deceased’s cousin, claimed to have witnessed the defendant and a few other boys hitting the victim with planks. Later, a member of the defendant’s gang stabbed the victim in the left side of his chest, causing him to collapse and pass away before anyone could arrive to save him.
Ibironke Odetola, the prosecution, brought six witnesses and presented the defendant’s declarations, the deceased’s photos, and other supporting documentation as exhibits.
Through his attorney, M.A. Daramola, the defendant spoke in defense and called one witness.
Judge Jubril Aladejana stated in the ruling that the fact that the deceased was attacked with boards prior to being stabbed in the left side of his chest indicated that the attackers wanted to either give him great physical injury or kill him.
“Consequently, the sole issue for determination is resolved in favor of the prosecution,” the judge declared after finding that the prosecution had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant and other people at large conspired to commit the offense of murder at Eporo Ekiti on December 10, 2021.
“The offender is sentenced to seven years in prison without the possibility of a fine on count one (conspiracy). Adedayo Olawole, you are sentenced by this court to be hanged by the neck till you die on count two (murder). The judge said, “May God have mercy on your soul.”
