“Man Releases Dog on Policeman to Escape Arrest”

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a man named Gabriel Olayiwola for releasing his German shepherd dog on a police officer, ASP Oyagbola Jelili, in the Ikotun Egbe area of Lagos State. The incident occurred on March 1, 2023, when the officer was attempting to arrest Olayiwola for damaging his co-tenant’s BMW X5 car during a disagreement.

Olayiwola was charged with wilful damage of properties and threat to life. He was brought before Magistrate O. Y. Adefope of a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba on three counts.

According to the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, Olayiwola intentionally let his German shepherd dog attack ASP Oyagbola Jelili when the officer was trying to arrest him. The dog bit the officer’s right shoulder, causing him grievous harm. The charges against Olayiwola were filed under Sections 351 (d) (1), 168(d), and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

Olayiwola pleaded not guilty to the charges. The magistrate granted him bail in the amount of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned to September 22, 2023, for further proceedings.
